Warming Families Winter Items Challenge 2010

For those of you with generous souls and some time on your hands, there is a winter items challenge that is being run by Warming Families. Warming Families is a charitable organization that helps families in need by providing them with hand-made or new items. The coordinator for the GTA area is Dalyce Newby. Dalyce has been coordinating the pick-up and delivery of items in the GTA area for over 10 years. The Winter Items Challenge 2010 is to collect at least 400 hats, scarves, mittens, gloves, ear-warmers by December 31st. A great pattern for beginning crocheters is using granny squares. Join together 8-8 inch granny squares to make a scarf.

Granny Square:
Round 1: Chain 4. Join with the beginning chain.
Round 2: Chain 3 (replaces the first double crochet). Double crochet twice in the hole that you just created. Chain 2. Double crochet 3 times in the same hole. Chain 2. Double crochet 3 times in the same hole. Chain 2. Double crochet 3 times in the same hole. Join with the top of the beginning chain 3.
Round 3: Slip stitch into the first chain 2 space. Chain 3 (replaces the first double crochet). Double crochet 3 times in the hole. Chain 2. Double crochet 3 times in the same hole. * Double crochet 3 times, chain 2, double crochet 3 times in the next hole (these are your corners). Repeat from * 2 more times. Join with the top of the beginning chain 3.
Round 4: Slip stitch into the first chain 2 space. Chain 3 (replaces the first double crochet). Double crochet 3 times in the hole. Chain 2. Double crochet 3 times in the same hole. * Double crochet 3 times in the next hole (this is in between your corners). Double crochet 3 times, chain 2, double crochet 3 times in the next hole (this is in the corners). Repeat from * around. Join with the top of the beginning chain 3.

Repeat round 4 until the square measures 8 inches.
